SOCIOLOGY

The Sociology Program at Eastern Kentucky University offers excellent opportunities for education and research in many areas of sociology, including Appalachian studies, criminology and deviance, ecology and society, social inequalities of race, class and gender, demography, sociological theory, and global systems analysis. The program includes 6 faculty members (all with Ph.D.’s), full-time lecturers, and more than 100 undergraduates. The program is housed in the Keith Building (offices on first and second floors) and is part of Department of Anthropology, Sociology, and Social Work.

THE SOCIOLOGY PROGRAM'S MISSION

Sociology is a liberal arts discipline. The liberal arts promote democratic action and the study of human accomplishments in the light of critical reasoning. Liberal education challenges students and faculty to develop the quality of mind necessary to grasp the nature and complexity of the social problems we face and the ability to address these problems in a reasonable, constructive and compassionate way and thus enable us to build alliances where there might otherwise be conflict. Sociology classes are designed to increase awareness of the richness and diversity of human life. Sociology thus provides the multicultural education that is so prized in the world today. In recognizing the importance of an understanding of multiple cultures, students are able to meet the challenges of a variety of situations in the work force and increase their job effectiveness. For sociology graduates, who frequently find themselves in careers that stress working with a wide range of people, this is a valuable service.

DEGREE PROGRAMS

The Sociology Program offers undergraduate degree programs in Sociology and also sponsors minor degrees in Sociology, Deviance/Criminology, Appalachian Studies, and Social Inequalities. We hope to add a minor in Social Institutions and Social Change in the near future.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH

Our faculty prioritize effective teaching and quality research. Many of our faculty members have won awards for excellent teaching, research, or both and all maintain active research agendas. Look at the individual pages and you can see this for yourself!

ACCESSIBLE, QUALITY CLASSES & RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

All of our professors teach full-time, so students can interact closely with them. Our classes are offered regularly each year, and some each semester. And our faculty all have their own research projects and there are often opportunities for students to get involved.

PROGRAM EMPHASIS

Our program emphasizes a comprehensive foundation in the core of the sociological tradition, including theory, methods, and research. In addition to introductory sociology and social problems, we offer courses in criminology, deviance, the family, religion, ecology and society, race/class/gender relations, gerontology, and world-systems analysis.

WHERE OUR GRADUATES GO

Students who are disciplined, master their course material, get good grades, and apply themselves to opportunities for growth find more doors open for them after they have completed their studies. Our graduates who demonstrate these traits find that the world is their oyster, with job and career opportunities easily in the offing.
