Students for Social Consciousness
What is Students for Social Consciousness?
Students for Social Consciousness (SSC) is an EKU student group from the Sociology Program, Department of Anthropology, Sociology, and Social Work that was formed Fall semester 2007 to raise social consciousness of concerns relative to all faculty, staff, students, and the community at large through informative events and focused activities. The SSC seeks to bridge the gab between faculty, staff, students, registered student organizations, and the organizations and members of the surrounding communities in order to provide the most substantial information necessary to promote social knowledge.
What does the SSC do?
Lots of things! One of our main goals is to bridge the gap between academia, EKU, and the community at large. We collaborate with other student organizations to promote awareness of social issues, bring about social consciousness, and find possible solutions.
Who is eligible to join SSC?
Anyone! Yes, anyone. Students from all majors are welcome. EKU staff and Faculty and alumni are invited to join. Anyone in the community that is interested in issues such as poverty, environment, gender, race, and other social conflicts that we face today are also invited to join.
How much does it cost to join SSC?
Nothing. We do not have membership fees.
What does the SSC plan to do this semester?
We are teaming up with the Feminist for Change for Domestic Violence Awareness Week; collaborating with Older Wiser Learners for the Make A Difference Day Campaign; working with the Center for Appalachian Studies for our event, Music For the Mountains; beginning a voter registration and political awareness campaign that will continue through 2008.
What does the SSC plan to do in the future?
It is our hope that we will form lasting relationships with other student and community organizations to promote awareness of the social issues that affect us all.
When does SSC meet?
We meet bi-monthly (every other Friday) 2:30pm, Keith 109—Sociology Lab.
